What to Wear for Family Pictures in Indiana: A Simple Guide
One of the questions I hear most often before a family photography session is:
“What are we supposed to wear?”
And I completely understand! Choosing outfits for the whole family can feel overwhelming, especially when you're trying to coordinate different colors, personalities, ages, and sizes. The good news? Your family doesn't need to look perfectly coordinated. In fact, I love when family photographs feel natural and authentic. The goal is to choose outfits that work together without everyone looking exactly the same.
If you're planning family pictures in Hamilton County, Indiana, here are a few of my favorite tips for creating a warm, natural look.
Start With a Color Palette
Instead of choosing one color for everyone, start with a small group of colors that complement one another.
For fall family pictures in Indiana, some of my favorites are:
Cream • Rust • Olive • Brown • Mustard • Burgundy • Navy • Denim
You don't have to use all of them! Pick three or four colors and build everyone's outfits around them. For example, Mom might wear a cream sweater and jeans, Dad could wear a navy shirt with khakis, and the kids could incorporate rust, olive, or denim. The result feels coordinated without looking like everyone showed up wearing the same uniform.
Add Layers and Texture
Indiana weather can be unpredictable, especially during the fall! Layers are not only practical—they also photograph beautifully.
Think:
- Cozy sweaters
- Cardigans
- Denim jackets
- Flannels
- Scarves
- Corduroy
- Boots
- Textured dresses
Layers give you options if the weather changes and add visual interest to your photographs.
And if you get a little chilly during your session? That's just another reason to snuggle a little closer!
Choose Comfort Over Perfection
This one is especially important when you're dressing little ones. If your child absolutely refuses to wear a certain outfit, it's probably not going to make for a very enjoyable photography session. Choose something they can move, play, and be themselves in. Family pictures don't have to mean standing still and smiling for an hour. During my sessions, we'll walk, play, cuddle, laugh, and explore. Comfortable clothing makes all of that much easier.
Don't Forget the Details
Sometimes the little things make an outfit feel complete. A favorite pair of boots, a simple hair bow, a cozy sweater, or a beautiful necklace can add personality without taking attention away from your family. Try to avoid large logos, neon colors, or extremely busy patterns. Simple clothing tends to keep the focus where it belongs: on your family.
Think About Your Location
Your outfits should also make sense for the location you've chosen. For example, earthy colors and cozy layers look beautiful surrounded by the changing leaves at Koteewi Park. Softer, classic outfits can complement the gardens and pathways at Coxhall Gardens, while casual outfits work beautifully for a relaxed session at Central Park.

And Most Importantly—Be Yourselves
Your family photographs should look like your family. Don't feel like you need to dress everyone in expensive outfits or recreate something you've seen on Pinterest. Choose clothes that make you feel comfortable and confident and that reflect your family's personality. Because years from now, I want you to look at your photographs and remember more than what everyone was wearing.
I want you to remember the way your kids laughed.
The way they held your hand.
The way you snuggled them close.
And the little moments that made this particular season of your family's life so special.
